Martin O’Neill Sends Strong Message as Arne Engels Transfer Interest Refuses to Go Away

It feels like barely a week goes by without another club being linked with Arne Engels, and it’s easy to understand why. The Belgian midfielder has quickly become one of Celtic’s most important players, so it comes as no surprise that Premier League and European clubs are keeping a close eye on him.

Martin O’Neill has now had his say on the growing speculation, and his comments will strike a chord with supporters who would like to see Engels remain in Glasgow.

O’Neill acknowledged that when players perform at the level Engels has, transfer interest is inevitable. But he also made it clear that Celtic are under no pressure to cash in on one of their brightest talents.

That’s exactly where the club should be.

Reports continue to suggest that West Ham United are leading the race to sign Engels, while Nottingham Forest remain long-term admirers after previously trying to lure him south. For Celtic supporters, though, there is little reason to panic.

Engels is under contract, he’s settled at the club and Celtic are in a healthy financial position. This isn’t a situation where the club needs to accept the first sizeable offer that lands on the table.

If a club wants one of the best midfielders in Scottish football, they should expect to pay what he’s worth.

A Player Celtic Can’t Afford to Lose

Since arriving at Celtic, Engels has shown exactly why the club invested heavily in him. Comfortable on the ball, composed under pressure and capable of influencing games at both ends of the pitch, he’s already become a vital part of the midfield.

Replacing that kind of quality is never easy.

With another Premiership title to defend and European football once again on the horizon, losing Engels this late in the transfer window would create a huge gap in the squad. Finding a player capable of making the same impact wouldn’t be straightforward, regardless of the transfer fee.

Ignore the Noise

Transfer rumours are part and parcel of modern football, especially when players are performing well. Celtic fans have seen this story before with the likes of Matt O’Riley, Jota and several others who attracted attention after impressing in green and white.

The key difference this time is that Celtic are in control.

Unless a club comes in with an offer that simply can’t be ignored, there’s no reason for the Hoops to entertain the idea of selling Engels. The midfielder remains central to the club’s ambitions this season, and supporters will be hoping he continues to pull on the famous green and white hoops for a long time yet.

As O’Neill’s comments suggest, interest from elsewhere is a compliment to how well Engels has performed. But admiration doesn’t mean a transfer is inevitable—and Celtic should be in no rush to let one of their standout players walk out the door.
