Celtic Go All Out to Sign Kieron Bowie – This One Just Makes Sense

Every transfer window throws up a few names that divide opinion, but Kieron Bowie shouldn’t be one of them. If the reports linking Celtic with the Hellas Verona striker are accurate, then this is a deal the club should be doing everything possible to get over the line.

Supporters have been crying out for fresh attacking options, and Bowie fits the profile almost perfectly. He’s young, Scottish, hungry to prove himself and already has experience playing at a high level after his move to Serie A. Even though Hellas Verona endured a difficult campaign, Bowie’s stock hasn’t fallen. If anything, he’s shown the mentality needed to test himself outside his comfort zone.

For Celtic, that’s exactly the type of character the club should be targeting.

Martin O’Neill will know that domestic success alone isn’t enough. Celtic need a squad capable of challenging on every front, with players who can cope with the relentless demands of the Premiership while also stepping up on European nights. Bowie may not be the finished article, but few players at 23 are. What he does possess is a skill set that can’t easily be coached.

He presses relentlessly, battles with defenders, runs the channels and never gives centre-halves an easy afternoon. Add in his improving goalscoring record and it’s easy to see why Celtic’s recruitment team are reportedly keeping a close eye on him.

There’s another reason this transfer makes sense. Celtic have often been at their best when signing players before they reach their peak. Rather than paying inflated fees for established stars, the club has built success by identifying talent ready to take the next step.

Bowie feels like one of those players.

After impressing in Scotland, he took the brave decision to move abroad rather than settling for comfort. That ambition should be applauded. Not every Scottish player is willing to test themselves in one of Europe’s top leagues, and the experience he’ll have gained in Italy could prove invaluable if he returns north of the border.

Of course, it won’t come cheap. Verona aren’t likely to let him leave without making a profit, and there will almost certainly be competition for his signature. But Celtic are in a position where investing in the right player is far more important than simply signing the cheapest option.

If the club believe Bowie can become Celtic’s first-choice striker over the next few years, then paying a premium now could look like a bargain in the future.

Naturally, some supporters will ask whether he has scored enough goals to justify the hype. It’s a fair question. But football is about much more than statistics. Bowie offers energy, physicality, movement and a willingness to do the dirty work that often creates space for those around him. Those qualities can be just as valuable in a Celtic side that dominates possession and faces packed defences most weeks.

The transfer window is full of speculation, and until scarves are held aloft at Celtic Park nothing is guaranteed. But this rumour has a different feel to it. Bowie fits the age profile, the recruitment strategy and the style of player Celtic should be pursuing.

If there is a genuine opportunity to bring him back to Scotland, Celtic shouldn’t hesitate.
